Today Wibke and I managed to retrace a few steps from the early years of our marriage. The first few years were spent in the Black Forest of Germany. One of our favorite hangouts was the Belchen region. I love this place. On a clear day you can stand atop the Belchen and see the Swiss Alps. Today wasn't that clear but clear enough for us to spend a few moments under the cross that stands at the Belchen's summit.
The sight made me think of the words of the prophet Amos (chapter 4:13):
He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth-- the LORD God Almighty is his name.
One of my favorite hymns, “How Great Thou Art,” sprang to mind up there too:
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee; How great Thou art!
How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
What a great day exploring the beauty of creation!
